A 41-year-old man accused of kicking and strangling a teenage girl during a family violence incident at a home in Canberra's north on Sunday has faced the ACT Magistrates Court.

Warning: This story contains details readers may find distressing.

ACT Policing alleged the man got into an argument with the 15-year-old yesterday afternoon after returning to the property, which he shared with her and his partner.

It's alleged he began punching a window and when confronted by the girl, kicked and strangled her.

Investigators said when the girl broke free of his hold and began to call police, the man allegedly threw a piece of broken glass at her.

The man is also alleged to have kicked his partner when she attempted to intervene.

A neighbour also called police during the incident, and the man was arrested at about 2:30pm.

The man faced court today on two counts of common assault as well as charges of choking, strangling or suffocating a person, and damaging property.

He applied for bail, with his lawyer telling the court he had a place in a residential detox program beginning on Wednesday.

Prosecutors said they opposed bail due to the likelihood of him reoffending or endangering the safety of others.

Special Magistrate Sean Richter said he would consider bail if he could be shown evidence of the detox program booking.

The man withdrew his bail application and was remanded in custody, to reapply for release later this week.
