Taylor Jenkins Reid Movie ‘Atmosphere’ Lands at Black Bear

The adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid‘s latest bestseller, Atmosphere, has landed with Black Bear for distribution.

The company has taken the worldwide rights to the feature film that is being written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the filmmakers behind Half Nelson and Captain Marvel, and the studio Laika. In addition to releasing the film theatrically in the US, Black Bear will co-finance Atmosphere with Laika and serve as the international sales agent.

Atmosphere is a sweeping romance between two pioneering female astronauts breaking into NASA in the early days of the shuttle program in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

The synopsis for the story reads: ”The film follows Joan, a brilliant young astronaut, and a trailblazing new generation of astronauts as they prepare for missions where every launch could be their last. As the missions unfold, Joan and fellow astronaut Vanessa forge a bond that will forever shape their lives. But when catastrophe leaves them fighting for survival, they are propelled into an impossible race against time that will test the limits of courage, sacrifice, and love.”

Laika‘s Travis Knight, Matt Levin and Jeremy Kipp Walker are acting as producers, along with Boden and Fleck. Jenkins Reid and Brad Mendelsohn will also produce via Circle M+P. Maryse Knight and Zac Locke are executive producers.

Laika is best known for its artful stop-motion animation films like Coraline, but has been pushing into the live-action space, building out a slate of features that include Lulu Wang‘s Audition, starring Lucy Liu and Charles Melton. Laika will release its latest film, Wildwood, on Oct 23.

Black Bear recently released Matthew McConaughey movie The Rivals of Amziah King and will next release Olivia Colman-starrer Wicker, out Oct 23.
