1942: A Love Story gets limited theatrical run after makers flag technical issues at certain cinemas

Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films has announced that the restored version of 1942: A Love Story will now be screened only at select cinemas following an overwhelming response to its theatrical re-release. The production house said the decision has been taken to ensure audiences experience the film in the technical quality intended by the restoration team. The film returned to theatres on August 21 in a meticulously restored version, with audiences revisiting the 1994 romantic drama on the big screen.

Makers to screen restored version at select theatres

In a statement addressed to audiences and cinema lovers, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films said it had received a large number of messages from viewers praising the film's theatrical experience over the weekend. The production house explained that the film was restored in 8K resolution with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. However, it subsequently found that some cinema halls were not technically equipped to project the restoration in its intended quality.

The makers have therefore decided to limit the theatrical run to "handpicked theatres" that meet the required technical standards. The production house said it does not want to compromise on the quality of the restoration and wants audiences to experience the film "at its absolute best." Viewers have also been asked to check the updated cinema list to find the participating theatres in their city.

Two-year restoration involved over 9,000 human hours

The restoration of 1942: A Love Story was carried out over nearly two years in Bologna, Italy, and at Prasad Film Labs. According to the production house, more than 150 people worked on the restoration, contributing over 9,000 human hours to the project. The iconic soundtrack alone reportedly required more than 300 hours of work from the restoration team to remaster it.

The filmmakers also noted that while India currently has 4K cinemas, the restoration has been created with future viewing in mind, allowing audiences to revisit the film in high quality in the years to come.

Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 1942: A Love Story stars Anil Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Jackie Shroff and Anupam Kher in pivotal roles. The film is produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, with music composed by R. D. Burman and lyrics written by Javed Akhtar.
