The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers heroes officially return in 2027 for a new adventure. Every Power Ranger must gain access to a power source, establish a connection to the Morphin Grid or another equivalent energy system, and learn to use that power responsibly. However, the franchise has never established one universal recruitment process. Some teams receive their powers from ancient artifacts, such as the Dino Gems in Dino Thunder or the Energems in Dino Charge; while others are trained and equipped by organizations such as Space Patrol Delta in S.P.D. and Lightspeed Rescue.

The number of characters who have held Ranger powers is now enormous. The television franchise alone features more than twenty different Power Rangers teams, with successive seasons introducing replacement Rangers and additional sixth Rangers, plus temporary transformations and returning veterans. There's no single official count of every individual who has ever qualified, particularly once comics, alternate universes, and crossover specials are included. The important distinction is that being a Ranger is a mantle that can be inherited and shared, provided they have access to the relevant power source and can fulfill the responsibilities attached to it.

The Power Rangers franchise is filled with memorable lineups like the time-traveling Time Force and the futuristic police force S.P.D., as well as individual heroes, including the first team leader Jen Scotts and the stoic commander Anubis "Doggie" Cruger. However, there's no iteration of the Power Rangers that truly rivals the original.

The Original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Officially Return In Four Months

The original squad assembles in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers #1 by Boom Studios

BOOM! Studios launches a massive franchise revival in March 2027 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1, which marks the official return of the original team, wearing their classic suits. Set one full decade after the squad disbanded, BOOM!'s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers sees every hero face the dilemma of reuniting with their teammates while dealing with the highs and lows of their lives as regular young adults. The villain bringing the original Power Rangers together isn't Rita Repulsa this time around, but her alternate-reality counterpart Rita Rabiosa, whose threat to the world doesn't leave the heroes time to ponder.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is penned by DC Comics Bombshells, Angela: Queen of Hel, and Witchblade writer Marguerite Bennett, and illustrated by The Transformers artist Andrew Lee Griffith and Astonishing X-Men Infinity Comic artist Phillip Sevy. Unlike the original 1990s live-action Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television broadcast where multiple heroes departed for a World Peace Summit, this new storyline presents a reality where Jason, Zack, Trini, Kimberly, and Billy successfully completed their initial tour of duty and permanently parted ways to build their regular adult lives. BOOM!'s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers also isn't directly tied to the multiversal Power Rangers Unlimited.

The Original Power Rangers Are Worthy Of The Avengers And Justice League Treatment

The Original Six Power Rangers Have A Special Place In Their Franchise's Lore

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

The original six Mighty Morphin heroes have earned a legendary status that resembles the legacy of the original Avengers and Justice League lineups. Part of the appeal of the Power Rangers franchise is the continuous introduction of new teams with unique motifs, but Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Trini, Billy, and Tommy will forever be the definitive Power Rangers. So, just like Marvel and DC have countless reimaginings of their flagship teams' classic lineups, the original Power Rangers team has the potential to star in multiple new titles, both continuing their story and going back to their beginnings.

Otherwise, restricting the original Power Rangers to their original 1990s television history severely limits the storytelling possibilities of a truly magnificent sci-fi concept. Apart from everything they could do after parting ways and coming back together to fight Rita Rabiosa, the original six could be reinvented in parallel timelines, reboots, sliding timescale restarts, and adaptations that draw from young-adult dramas, gritty survival thrillers, or epic cosmic space operas. Without the burden of VFX, budget, and actor availability, new titles starring the original Power Rangers could reimagine the heroes with bolder ideas than their 2017 live-action movie.
