The Visayas grid will be placed on red and yellow alert status on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, due to the unavailability of power plants, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

In an advisory, the red alert will be raised from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. while yellow alert will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The NGCP said the Visayas grid has an available capacity of 2,468 MW against a peak demand of 2,545 MW, as 685 MW remain unavailable to the grid.

The following were cited as factors that contributed to the red and yellow alerts in the Visayas grid:

  • Unavailability of Visayas’ large coal plants PEDC 3 and KSPC 1.
  • Limited power imports from Mindanao due to the planned outages of GNPK 4, TSI 2, TMI Mobile2 - U2, and Pulangi 4 U2

The grid operator said five plants are on forced outage in October, four plants since September, three plants since August, one plant since June, four plants since May, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021, while 22 plants are running at derated capacity.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

On the other hand, a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement. —AOL, GMA News
