Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for VisionQuest episodes 1 & 2
Ever since 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, MCU fans have been looking for any sign with great hope that Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch isn't actually dead. However, Marvel Studios continues to double down, confirming what happened to Wanda Maximoff in the Doctor Strange sequel.
At the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda Maximoff sacrifices herself by destroying every copy of the Darkhold and bringing Mount Wundagore crashing down around her. That said, the MCU does have an established track record reversing apparent deaths, either by featuring characters from other timelines/realities or full-on resurrections. Case in point, both Paul Bettany's Vision and James Spader's Ultron are back in VisionQuest, the third MCU series concluding a trilogy that includes 2021's WandaVision and 2024's Agatha All Along.
As the newly rebuilt Vision attempts to understand his identity and form a connection to the memories and humanity of his past self in VisionQuest, Wanda's complicated legacy and fate remain extremely relevant to the new MCU series in more ways than one. Likewise, VisionQuest is arguably making Wanda's fate even more controversial than it already was.
The MCU's New VisionQuest Series Doubles Down On Scarlet Witch's Death
At the time, there was plenty of doubt surrounding Wanda Maximoff's apparent death in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It felt deliberately ambiguous, as there was no actual body shown in the aftermath of Mount Wundagore crashing down around her. Likewise, many MCU fans have since felt that the Scarlet Witch could indeed return.
That said, 2024's Agatha All Along very much supported the idea that Wanda is indeed dead, as it was her demise that resulted in Agatha Harkness being freed from the spell Wanda had cast on her at the end of 2021's WandaVision (combined with a counter spell from Billy Maximoff and Lady Death forcing Agatha to face reality).
Question 1 of 3
Now, 2026's VisionQuest has doubled down on Wanda's fate, with Vision confirming in the premiere that Wanda was "crushed under the weight of a mountain", a reference to the collapse of Mount Wundagore. Overall, the admission unfortunately feels pretty cut and dry rather than some sort of unresolved MCU mystery.
While this isn't to say that there couldn't perhaps be a future reveal that brings a being as magically powerful as Wanda Maximoff back to the land of the living, her fate currently feels pretty black and white. Likewise, it's a pretty disappointing conclusion considering just how controversial Wanda's last appearance was...and it's only become worse thanks to Agatha All Along and now VisionQuest.
4 Years Later, Marvel Proves Scarlet Witch's Villain Turn Makes No Sense
The frustrating irony of Wanda Maximoff's death was that it was the direct consequence of her attempts to redeem the darkness and damage she caused as the primary antagonist of Multiverse of Madness, desperate to reunite with her twin boys Billy and Tommy in another reality no matter the cost. Thanks to Doctor Strange and America Chavez, Wanda ultimately understood how dark she had become, explaining her sacrifice by the movie's end. However, her entire villain turn has become completely unnecessary four years later.
Both Agatha All Along and VisionQuest have since revealed that Wanda's children made their way back into the main MCU timeline anyway, thanks to Billy's magic placing his and Tommy's souls into the bodies of teens William Kaplan and Thomas Shepard before Wanda removed her Hex over Westview.
As seen by the end of VisionQuest's first two episodes, Thomas and Vision have now found each other, and the end of Agatha All Along confirmed that Billy had begun searching for his brother. As such, the MCU looks to be gearing up for a full reunion of the surviving members of the Maximoff family...making Wanda's dark turn post-WandaVision even more frustrating, while also making a potential resurrection feel even more necessary to make up for it.
Basically, Wanda Maximoff corrupted herself trying to reach her children, only for both boys to return without her needing to rewrite reality to begin with. While Wanda couldn't have known this would happen, her actions still had devastating consequences. Keeping all of this in mind, if any MCU character deserves to be brought back, it's Wanda Maximoff's Scarlet Witch, who clearly deserves so much more than the unnecessary fate she was given.
