Baguio's Mirador welcomed Archbishop Sheen for Filipino bishops' retreat in 1975

Blessed Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once visited Baguio City to direct a retreat for Filipino bishops more than 50 years ago.

In the social media post of Mirador Jesuit Villa Retreat House, the pioneer of Catholic media preachers stayed from July 1, 1975 up to July 6, 1975 to give a retreat to the members of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

According to the CBCP website, the president at that time was Julio R. Cardinal Rosales, who was also the Archbishop of Cebu. The term of office of Rosales was from 1974–1977, his second term as the head of CBCP.

The Jesuit-run Mirador Retreat House was founded in 1907 and was once a meteorological observatory, so visitors can still find some instruments at the site.

It has become a popular spiritual-religious space where visitors spend time for prayer away from the bustling city.

According to Mirador's website, "Groups of priests, religious, lay people come here for retreats. Conferences are held by bishops, scholars, student leaders, journalists, businessmen. Men and women who want time to think, time to reflect on what they are, what they must be or do come here, to this quite hill beneath a quiet heaven: to reflect, to pray, to observe the signs of our troubled, yet immensely hopeful, times; to open windows to even broader horizons."

Cardinal Tagle presides over beatification rites

It was in March this year that the Vatican's Dicastery for the Causes of Saints announced that former Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle and currently the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization would preside over the beatification rites that would bring Sheen a step closer to sainthood.

According to the short announcement, the beatification will be held in St. Louis, Missouri in the United States on September 24, 2026.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen was a popular preacher on television and radio.

Bishop Louis Tylka, Diocese of Peoria, described him as "... was one of the greatest voices of evangelization in the Church and the world in the 20th century."

Sheen was declared Venerable by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 in recognition of his heroic virtue.

It was in 2019 that the approval of Pope Francis of a miracle that occurred through the intercession of Archbishop Sheen that cleared the path for his beatification. — BAP, GMA News
