Carly Simon Shares “Unpredictable” Parkinson’s Disease and Cancer Diagnoses

Maybe Carly Simon wants James Taylor to know this song is about him.

With the release of her new album Comes in Waves on Aug. 14—the famed singer’s first in over 18 years—Simon appears to call back to her and Taylor’s turbulent marriage from 1972 to 1983 on the album’s second track, “Maybe I Never Loved You.”

“Maybe I never loved you / But anyway, I thought I did,” Simon sings on the track. “I married you, we had a kid / That counts for something.”

“Maybe I never loved you / Yes, and maybe I did,” she continues. “And maybe you never loved me / Although God knows, you said you did.”

The 83-year-old—who shares kids Sally, 52, and Ben, 49, with Taylor, 78—also sings about the times her former partner was there for her, saying, “You came for me those times I hid / I’m so glad you did that. And maybe it’s wrong to wonder how everything kind became forbidden.”

Still, the lyrics also question if her ex-husband ever loved her as she confessed she was unsure about her own feelings as well.

“And maybe it’s best to bury whatever it was we had our fill of,” Simon sings, “Maybe I never loved you / Maybe I always will.”

E! News has reached out to reps for Simon and Taylor for comment but has not heard back.

Since her split from the “Fire and Rain” singer, Simon—who recently shared she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease—has been candid about where she and Taylor stand. 

"I still want to heal him, I still want to make him all right," she told People in 2015, adding at the time that the two did not speak. "And I love him so much."

"My incredible loyalty to him, in spite of the fact that he has treated me without any regard, has been so painful to me for so long," she added, explaining that while writing her 2015 memoir Boys in the Trees she “started to understand that I could love and not be loved. And that was the big realization for me, that it doesn't have to be a two-way street."

Simon has previously admitted to writing songs about her former partners, as the Grammy winner famously revealed the second verse of her hit “You’re So Vain” was inspired by her relationship with Warren Beatty. Although she joked to People in 2015, “Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!”
