Carly Rae Jepsen Talks New Album, 10 Years of ‘Emotion’ & ‘Call Me Maybe’ Success | Billboard News Interview

Carly Rae Jepsen’s Day and Night era is here, and in this Billboard News interview, she welcomes fans into Club Carly while also celebrating the 10th anniversary of her Emotions album and reflecting on the massive success of “Call Me Maybe.”

Carly breaks down why she wanted Day and Night to be a double album, why “On Wires” was the perfect debut single, the ABBA-inspired energy behind “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor,” how motherhood shaped her creative process and visuals (including filming while pregnant), what fans can expect next, plus dream collaborators and a rapid-fire Day vs. Night round.

Meghan Mahar: This is Club Carly, essentially.

Carly Rae Jepsen: I, I g- I guess. I mean, is she allowed to wear her pajamas? Hi, I’m Carly Rae Jepsen, and this is Billboard News.

Meghan Mahar: We are so excited to have you right as you are opening your Day and Night era to the fans. How does it feel?

Carly Rae Jepsen: Oof. I mean, the countdown is on. I’m so excited. I’ve been waiting for this, so I’m, I’m very thrilled. 

Meghan Mahar: And it’s not just one album. It is a double-

Carly Rae Jepsen: It’s two

Meghan Mahar: … album. Two.

Carly Rae Jepsen: Yeah, two albums. I always knew I wanted to do one day was a double album, and if not now, then when, really? And I, I was kind of divided in these two different flavors of what I wanted to do musically, and the solution was sort of just why not do both at the same time? So Day and Night was born.

Meghan Mahar: Porque no los dos. [Laughs]

Carly Rae Jepsen: [Laughs] Yeah, exactly.

Meghan Mahar: So you’ve launched this era. Why did you choose “On Wires” as the debut single?

Carly Rae Jepsen: I was really excited about how, uh, surprising it would be. I hadn’t really done anything quite like “On Wires” before, and I think, you know, as a musician who’s been in this for a while now, that’s so exciting to land on, like, a new genre to play with that maybe you haven’t dabbled in before and to figure out how to make it your own. And “On Wires” was, uh, a song that I wrote with, um, Nate Cyphert and Kyle Shearer, and even the night we wrote it, I think we all felt like we had something special. So, um, yeah, I just went with my gut, really. It was as simple as that.
