How Scrubs Season 2 Will Test One Of TV's Greatest Couples Explained By Donald Faison

Scrubs will put Turk and Carla’s relationship through some new challenges in season 2.

Donald Faison and Judy Reyes’ characters began dating early on in the original Scrubs’ run, and married in the season 3 finale. While there were rocky periods they faced as a couple, they were still happily together when the original show ended, and remain so in ABC’s Scrubs revival. However, Faison has opened up about how Scrubs season 2 will test what he describes as "the best couple in television history.”

In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, Faison revealed there are two things that will challenge Turk and Carla when Scrubs returns. First, Turk remains "burnt out at work. He's having a really hard time motivating himself to continue to be excellent at his job.” Second, Turk realizes he’s gotten “comfortable” in his and Carla’s marriage. Upon seeing how Zach Braff’s J.D. is “going way overboard” in his relationship with Rachel Bilson’s Charlie, Turk realizes, "I'm not doing any of this in my relationship with my wife.” Faison added about the second challenge:

I don't think it causes obstacles for Carla as much as it does for Turk because, more than anything, he wants to be with her and make her happy. And if he's not doing that, he feels like he's failing her. And so, he's decided to do things that he wouldn't normally do, like choreplay, which is foreplay but with chores. I do not like choreplay. This is Donald speaking now. But the outcome of what choreplay brings to the table? I'm all for that.

Turk feeling burnt out was first addressed in the Scrubs revival’s series premiere, as he felt “no joy” in his position as Sacred Heart Hospital’s Chief of Surgery. While Turk was able to muster up enough enthusiasm to inspire Amanda Morrow’s Dashana Trainor, one of the surgical interns, his exhaustion wasn’t deeply explored for the rest of season 1. As for Turk and Carla’s marriage, the main obstacle they dealt with together in season 1 was Carla realizing she needed to lighten her workload at the hospital because of her menopause.

Reyes will remain a recurring cast member in Scrubs season 2, as she also stars as Selena Soto in the fellow ABC series High Potential, which is returning for season 3 at a yet-to-be-announced date. Faison continues on as a series regular alongside Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Ava Bunn, who was promoted to the main cast for season 2 after recurring in season 1 as Dr. Samantha Tosh. It’s unclear if any of Turk and Carla’s four daughters will appear in season 2.

Along with Turk and Carla’s marital shake-ups and J.D.’s new relationship with Charlie, Scrubs season 2 will also see John C. McGinley’s Dr. Perry Cox continuing to visit Sacred Heart as a patient, as he was diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease late into season 1. Neil Flynn will recur as The Janitor following his guest appearance in the season 1 finale, and Scott Foley is returning as Sean Kelly, Elliot Reid’s ex-boyfriend. Keyla Monterroso Mejia has also been cast in a recurring capacity as a surgical nurse named Mimi.

The first two episodes of Scrubs season 2 premiere Wednesday, September 30 on ABC.
