Govt calls for wider B50 use, faster EV adoption in greater Jakarta

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has called for the wider use of B50 biodiesel and electric vehicles (EVs) in the greater Jakarta area, including Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Cianjur, to reduce sulfur levels in the air.

"We previously wrote to Pertamina to prioritize B50 supplies for Jakarta," Hanif told reporters after a press conference in the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs in Jakarta on Monday.

According to Hanif, prioritizing B50 in Jakarta could reduce sulfur levels in the air by around 50 percent compared to conventional diesel fuel.

"Fossil fuels generally still have relatively high sulfur content... The permitted level is only 50 or less," he said.

He also called for acceleration of the adoption of electric vehicles in the region.

Hanif said an effort to reduce emissions in Jakarta is replacing fossil fuels with electric-powered motors.

State-owned energy company PT Pertamina (Persero) said it has distributed B50 biodiesel through its distribution network, from fuel terminals to public fuel stations, in line with government regulations.

"Pertamina distributes B50 throughout its distribution network, from fuel terminals to public fuel stations," Pertamina Vice President of Corporate Communication Muhammad Baron told ANTARA in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said Pertamina uses the transition period to ensure that B50 can be distributed fully without disrupting supplies for the public and businesses.

Baron assured that Pertamina maintains B50 quality through routine testing at fuel terminals and monitoring at service points.

Pertamina, says Baron, also coordinates with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas), and other stakeholders to ensure the B50 implementation runs smoothly to support national energy self-sufficiency.
