US issues new warning to Americans in the Middle East

The US government has urged its citizens across the Middle East to exercise caution due to the possibility of an escalation in the Saudi-Houthi conflict. 

In a post on X, the State Department warned of the potential for “unforeseen escalation” and the complexity of the “security environment.”

This is the latest security alert the country has issued since the US began a war against Iran in February. 

Unlike previous calls that point to tensions between the US and Iran and the possibility of escalation, this alert seeks to notify US citizens of growing tension on a new front in the war. 

The US asked citizens in the region to watch for potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.

The alert also warned that Iran and groups supportive of Tehran could target US interests overseas or locations associated with Americans.

“Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise heightened vigilance and be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.

“Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports. This military conflict could escalate rapidly.

It further warned citizens outside to “reconsider travel to and through the region.”

In a separate alert, US diplomatic missions in the Gulf warned individually about the complex security environment in the Middle East. 

US citizens were advised to monitor airline and airport operations, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings and follow instructions from local authorities.

The warning came hours after the Houthis struck Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, and oil facilities with a barrage of missiles and drones. 

Emergency alerts sounded in Riyadh earlier on Saturday, with residents reporting loud explosions, and flights were severely disrupted at the city’s airport. No casualties were reported.

Although the country claimed it intercepted them, the strike left the city on edge. It is the first strike on the city in months. 

It also comes days after the reported meeting between US officials and representatives of the Houthi rebel group. 

Reuters reported that the meeting, although not made public, was held at the US Embassy in Muscat and was organised by Oman.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, President Donald Trump cut short his weekend stay at Camp David to return to the White House. 

The White House did not explain the change to his schedule.

Tension between Riyadh and the Houthis escalated in July after the rebels declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia and seized control of critical nodes on the Bab al-Mandeb coastline.

The attack on Saudi’s national oil company, Saudi Aramco, which damaged key facilities, opened a new front in the Middle East war.

The Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of blockading Yemen and interfering in its internal matters. Saudi Arabia is the major backer of the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
