The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, with the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, urging Nigerians to find and begin using their postcodes.

Tijani announced the launch in a post on X on Thursday, describing the system as a step towards making locations across the country easier to identify and connecting people and businesses to services and opportunities.

The system, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service, assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in Nigeria.

The code is designed to provide a precise, GIS-enabled reference for identifying locations.

Tijani said the system could help businesses reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, enable families to provide accurate locations during emergencies and help government agencies reach communities with essential services.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” he said.

He said accurate postcodes would form part of the infrastructure needed to support President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1tn economy.

“As we work towards (President Bola Tinubu’s) ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations,” Tijani said.

The minister encouraged Nigerians to search for their postcodes through the official Digital Postcode website, postcode.gov.ng, and share them with family members, friends and businesses.

The system is designed to identify locations through five levels — state, local government area, district, area and building — with each addressable building receiving a unique code.

NIPOST had earlier said the digital postcode would support services including deliveries, emergency response, public service delivery and e-commerce by providing a standard reference for locations.
