Delhi HC notice to Abhijit Mitra, X, Google over Saurav Das’ privacy plea

The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notices and summons to commentator Abhijit Iyer Mitra, and various law portals and media platforms on a privacy plea filed by Cockroach Janta Party spokesperson Saurav Das. The CJP leader has sought action against them for allegedly putting his residential details in public domain.

X (formerly known as Twitter) told the Delhi high court on Monday that posts containing the residential address and other personal information of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) spokesperson Saurav Das had been taken down and were no longer accessible.

The submission was made by X’s lawyer before a bench of Justice Sachin Datta in a suit filed by Das against political commentator Abhijit Iyer Mitra and several organisations, including media platform The Pamphlet, social media accounts associated with Jaipur Dialogues and Sunday Guardian, and legal news platform LawBeat.

In his suit, Das alleged that the defendants had violated his privacy by publishing the content in the public domain.

Justice Datta, however, issued summons in Das’s suit as well as in his application seeking to restrain the defendants from further publishing or disseminating such content.

In his suit, in which he has sought ₹2 crore in damages, Das, represented by senior advocate Akhil Sibal, alleged that he had been residing in a rented property in Greater Kailash since early 2025 and that representatives of The Pamphlet had trespassed onto the premises, recorded its interiors and subsequently published the footage on X on August 5. The video, the suit said, garnered more than 2.1 million views and was republished on August 10.

Das further alleged that Mitra disclosed details of his residence during a programme hosted by LawBeat, identifying his neighbour and incorrectly stating that the monthly rent was around ₹7 lakh. He claimed that Mitra subsequently published multiple posts containing the alleged personal information.

Besides damages, the suit also seeks an injunction restraining the defendants from further publishing or disseminating such content.

During the hearing, The Pamphlet’s lawyer, Abhinav Chandrachud, submitted that the X posts were no longer accessible, but sought time to file a response on the merits of the case.

Mitra’s lawyer opposed the suit, arguing that there was no cause of action against him.
