2027 AFCON Qualifiers: Nigeria give an update on Victor Osimhen

In a new post on social media today, the Super Eagles have officially given an update on Victor Osimhen ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Nigeria will be without star striker Victor Osimhen for their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau after the forward was ruled out through injury.

The Super Eagles confirmed on Sunday that Osimhen will miss both fixtures as he continues his recovery from a muscle strain.

“Victor Osimhen will miss Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau as he continues to recover from a muscle strain.

“We wish Victor a speedy recovery,” the Super Eagles said.

Osimhen had initially been included in head coach Eric Chelle’s 24-man squad for the two qualifiers, with Nigeria hopeful that the Galatasaray striker would recover in time for the international window.

However, his recovery has taken longer than expected. The striker was unavailable for Galatasaray’s Turkish Süper Lig encounter against Trabzonspor on September 19, having also missed previous matches following the injury.

Osimhen sustained the problem during Galatasaray’s 3-2 victory over Istanbul Başakşehir earlier in September, with subsequent examinations identifying an injury to his right adductor muscle group.

His absence means Chelle will have to adjust his attacking options as Nigeria begins its qualification campaign for AFCON 2027.

The Super Eagles will host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau in Bissau on September 29.

Nigeria are drawn in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania, with the top two teams in the group qualifying for the 2027 tournament in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Osimhen will now continue his recovery as he works towards a return to action for Galatasaray.
