Donald Glover Writing, Starring in ‘PUBG’ Video Game Adaptation in the Works at Netflix

Translate

Donald Glover is heading to Netflix for his next series project.

The Atlanta and Mr. & Mrs. Smith multi-hyphenate is developing a series adaptation of the video game PUBG at the streamer. Glover is set to star in, write, direct and executive produce the project. Glover’s brother and frequent collaborator Stephen Glover will also write and exec produce.

PUBG, from South Korean game company Krafton, is a battle royale game in which up to 100 players are deposited on an island and fight to be the last one standing. It was originally titled PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds after developer Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene. Krafton’s entertainment arm, LV3H, is looking to expand the franchise beyond games.

Should it go to series, PUBG will join a roster of video game adaptations at Netflix that includes an upcoming Assassin’s Creed series, a Gears of War feature film and animated shows based on Devil May Cry, Minecraft and Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, among others.

Story details on the Netflix project are being kept quiet for now. Donald and Stephen Glover will executive produce with Michael Schaefer for Neon TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for LV3H.

PUBG is Glover’s first work for Netflix. He was previously under an overall deal at Amazon MGM, where he co-created and starred in the first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith and co-created and exec produced the 2023 series Swarm. He remains an executive producer of Mr. & Mrs. Smith and is expected to reprise his on-screen role in season two, which began production in the spring.
