Spiky Michael Carrick reveals latest on Manchester United future in awkward interview

Translate

The former England midfielder’s position as Old Trafford boss is once again subject to intense speculation, scrutiny and confusion after an eight-goal thriller in the Premier League on Sunday.

Error-plagued Man Utd made another woeful start to the game at home and trailed 2-0 after only four minutes courtesy of goals from Alysson and Nicolas Jackson, though were back on level terms at the break thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ penalty and an equaliser by former Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.

However, Villa struck twice again in the first eight minutes of the second half to lead thanks to a John McGinn spot-kick and Leon Goretzka’s finish that appeared to leave the writing very much on the wall for the under-fire Carrick.

However, having recovered from a 2-0 half-time deficit to defeat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday night and end a nine-game winless run across all competitions, United fought back from two goals down for the second time in the match as Joshua Zirkzee struck first before a dramatic stoppage-time leveller from the head of fellow substitute Patrick Dorgu.

It sparked scenes of celebration from United’s CEO Omar Berrada, but leaves Carrick’s position still extremely uncertain ahead of another review of the situation that is expected to take place during the international break.

United have just one win to their name in 10 Premier League matches this season - at home to newly-promoted Ipswich back in August - and head into the break sitting inside the relegation zone with only eight points, with a tough trip to face arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield looming large next.

Carrick inevitably faced more questions about his future immediately following a pulsating thriller against Villa, and he offered an uncharacteristically spiky response during an awkward interview with Patrick Davison on Sky Sports.

Asked what he would expect to happen as he was told that “clearly there’s going to be a conversation” about his position, Carrick replied: “Is there?”

Davison said “you would assume so really”, before Carrick shot back with a smile: “Would you?”

Asked again what he thought, Carrick said: “You’re telling me. What do you think?”

Pressed again for his opinion, Carrick responded: “You know the situation, we haven’t won enough games. But I expect to move forward with things we’ve been working on, showing a lot of the good from today, tighten up a few mistakes and win some football matches.”

Carrick also reaffirmed that him resigning from the United job was “not going to happen”.
