DC Reveals Hal Jordan And John Stewart's Official Green Lantern Replacement For New Justice League Series

An experienced Editor representing Canada via ScreenRant's Team Anime, J.R. has been reading manga since the first printing of Shonen Jump in North America. This passion drove him to write about anime, manga, and manhwa since 2022, having recently served as Lead Anime Editor for ComicBook.com.
His favorite moments in media coverage include reviewing the series premieres of Zom 100 and Bleach: TYBW Part 2 back-to-back and briefly meeting Junji Ito at a VIZ gallery event in 2023.
For many of DC's collective continuities, its most iconic superhero team has long been the Justice League, with most fans worldwide being familiar with one roster or another. But among the founding members is usually one of Earth's core Green Lanterns, of whom Hal Jordan and John Stewart commonly rank as the most common selection. This has been the case across comic books and animated series, although fans never quite got to see a live-action Green Lantern fully join the Justice League in Zack Snyder's outing. Now, though, an appropriately-chosen new addition is appearing in DC's new spin on the supergroup, although it may be a surprise to those not caught up.
Among New York Comic Con's new reveals, DC's Absolute Justice turned heads with its stunning first cover art reveal spelling out who'll soon challenge the Absolute Universe's twisted Justice League for their hold over the title. Fittingly, the Absolute Superman duo of Jason Aaron and Juan Ferreyra will lead the series, which is the culmination of seven characters' journeys, including the symbiotically-bonded John Jones and the Martian, but with one exciting key addition: Sojourner "Jo" Mullein, the Absolute Green Lantern. Given Jo is the sole wielder of the Green Flame from Earth in the Absolute Universe, it's a fitting replacement, as she's arguably done plenty to earn her place.
Absolute Justice Brings Jo Mullein Into The Fold
Much like there isn't often a Justice League without a Martian Manhunter, the presence of a Green Lantern feels like a prerequisite in any new team compositions. With John Jones and the Martian bringing the group to meet for the first time soon, Jo will soon meet the Absolute Universe's greatest heroes, tempered in the harshest conditions imaginable while coming out as survivors, and fundamentally the same iconic saviors portrayed across DC's many stories.
It'll be a fascinating spectrum of enormously resourceful minds like that of Batman, to a Wonder Woman raised in Hell, to beings tied to understanding the universe like the Flash. Each are linked by the Martian's telepathy with Superman as their compassionate role model and moral North Star. Jo's powers as the Absolute Green Lantern will certainly sit highly among a group of hardened, resolute icons. But most importantly, Jo has earned her spot on the group throughout her story in this continuity, especially as others like Hal and John have found a different purpose.
The cosmic horror and intrigue of Absolute Green Lantern has already introduced plenty of trials and tribulations for Jo, whose acquisition of the Green Flame from Abin Sur bears important parallels to how Hal got his ring in other continuities. She's even rescued her universe's Hal from being overtaken by the Black Hand, with him instad being bathed in the light of Nos, the Violet Flame of this universe, while John was quite pleased to achieve enlightenment with the Gold Flame and absolute defense, in the absence of immediate offense. Guy Gardner is even shown with the Red Flame, mirroring his past iterations bearing the Red Lantern ring, this time with his powers based on restraint, not rage.
DC's Absolute Justice League Has Created Its Worthiest Challengers
Rather than an inverted Justice League iteration like the Crime Syndicate which knowingly does evil using characters strongly inspired by the classic roster, the Absolute Universe took a more sinister spin when it unveiled its first "Justice League". In a world order basically dictated by evil, even their sense of justice is thus warped, with the following original members:
DC's "Justice League" roster, along with former members, includes:
- Veronica Cale
- Dr. Elenore Thawne
- Hector Hammond
- Joker
- Veronica Cale
- Ra's al Ghul (deceased)
Additionally, Brainiac works alongside the League (and arguably manipulates them) while trying to foster a powerful enough intellect and counterbalance Absolute Joker as well as finally take down Superman.
Thus, with Absolute Justice, it appears the heroes of the story so far are rising up to retake the profaned version of justice that has been allowed to exist in their world. Under the whims of the current Justice League, horrible crimes have been consistently enabled, such as the actions on Hector Hammond's island, while Absolute Joker's Ark prisons are appearing worldwide seemingly as a means to crush resistance and carry out unspeakable crimes against humanity behind the scenes. The Absolute Justice League positively has to go, and thus, Jo Mullein's Absolute Green Lantern presence alongside the team will help them redefine the world's withered understanding of justice.
