Anne Hathaway has posted a glowing appraisal of Tom Cruise’s Digger and encouraged people to watch it for themselves after a string of scathing reviews

Satirical black comedy Digger was co-written and directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant) and follows oil tycoon Digger Rockwell (Cruise) as he tries to save the lives of thousands from an environmental disaster that he’s behind.

The film was panned by critics and has struggled at the box office. During its opening weekend, it took just $20million against a production budget of $160million, setting it up to become one of the biggest flops in Hollywood history.

However, it’s been warmly received by movie fans who have seen it. Digger currently has a Rotten Tomatoes audience rating of 73 per cent (based on more than 1,000 reviews).

One of the people who enjoyed Digger was Anne Hathaway, who left a glowing review on her Letterboxd account. “I loved this brilliant movie,” she wrote. “It’s smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious. It’s worth making the time to see and decide for yourself what you make of it. For me? 10/10.”

Homeland’s Mandy Patinkin has also encouraged movie lovers to “run” and see Digger in cinemas. “It’s one of the greatest pieces of film I have ever seen in my entire life. This movie being slammed by reviewers is beyond comprehension.

“Anyone who is dragging this piece through the mud should get a brain scan or see it again as they must not have been paying attention. This is one of the most daring, original, provocative pieces of art I’ve seen and bravo to every person that laid a hand on it.”

If you’re hoping to see Digger on IMAX though, you’ll have to be quick. The film is winding down its run after just a week, with The Odyssey returning from today (Friday October 9).

Meanwhile Hathaway’s own movie Verity was also released in cinemas last week. “Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, this seductive, psychological thriller follows renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) and Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who relocates to the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity.

After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession.”
