Akmal in straight fight against PH in Merlimau

Translate

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh is in a straight fight against a Pakatan Harapan candidate as he seeks a second term as the Merlimau assemblyman.

The Umno firebrand, who has been a major proponent of a Barisan Nasional-Perikatan Nasional pact, is only being challenged by Rahayu Hamzah of Amanah.

The seat comprises 70% Malay voters, followed by Chinese (17%) and Indians (11%).

Akmal was elected the Merlimau assemblyman in 2021 with a majority of 3,248 votes, retaining the Umno stronghold for BN.

He was later appointed a member of the state executive council, overseeing health, before he was moved to the rural development, agriculture and food security portfolios in 2023.

Akmal became Umno Youth chief in 2023, defeating three contenders for the post.
