Tim Wanyonyi Joins Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Movement Ahead of 2027 Elections

Translate

Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has formally joined Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Movement, ending months of speculation about his political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wanyonyi made his entry into the political outfit on Friday, October 30, 2026, during the launch of its secretariat and the official opening of its headquarters in Nairobi.

His decision comes as he prepares to challenge for the Bungoma gubernatorial seat, a race that could place him in direct competition with Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa.

Wanyonyi’s Bungoma gubernatorial ambitions

Wanyonyi, who is the brother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, has set his sights on becoming Bungoma governor.

The political significance of his latest move is heightened by the fact that Bungoma is also Sifuna’s home county. The ODM secretary-general has been openly critical of Barasa, who is expected to seek the governorship on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

Sifuna has previously described Barasa as disrespectful and unfit to lead the county, raising expectations that he could throw his political weight behind Wanyonyi.

Before joining Linda Mwananchi, some Bungoma residents had anticipated that Wanyonyi would pursue the governorship under his brother’s FORD Kenya party. His alignment with Sifuna’s movement now casts doubt on that possibility.

Despite their family ties, the two brothers have historically maintained separate political affiliations. Wanyonyi has been a long-serving member of ODM, while Wetangula leads FORD Kenya.

Their political paths remained distinct even during the CORD coalition in 2013 and the NASA alliance in 2017, with each maintaining loyalty to his respective party.

Wetangula and Wanyonyi take opposing political positions

The brothers are once again heading into an election cycle on opposing political sides.

While Wanyonyi has aligned himself with Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Movement, which is positioning itself as an opposition force, Wetangula has declared support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

Wanyonyi’s association with Sifuna could strengthen his gubernatorial ambitions, particularly given the ODM secretary-general’s influence in Western Kenya. An endorsement from Sifuna would potentially give the Westlands MP an advantage in the contest.

However, the political picture in Bungoma remains unsettled, with the possibility of FORD Kenya fielding its own candidate still open.

Incumbent Governor Ken Lusaka won the seat on a FORD Kenya ticket, giving the party an established political presence in the county.
