A man believed to be wielding an axe has allegedly attacked three people, including an elderly man and woman, in Gippsland and remains on the run, say Victoria Police.
Police were told the man, who is known to the victims, allegedly attacked the pair and another man at an address in Cowies Road, Tyers, about 12:30pm today.
The man, in his 50s, fled the address and the victims were able to call emergency services for help.
"The elderly male and second man are expected to be airlifted to hospital in Melbourne with life-threatening injuries," police said in a statement.
"The elderly woman also sustained critical injuries and was taken to hospital."
Police said a large-scale search was underway for the alleged offender, whom they believe may be armed with an axe and a handsaw.
He was last seen wearing a black-and-mustard-coloured jacket and carrying a black backpack.
Police said anyone who sees the man should not approach him, and instead contact Triple Zero (000).
Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers via 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
