Magnitude 6.4 earthquake jolts Davao Occidental, parts of Mindanao


KORONADAL CITY — A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Davao Occidental on Thursday afternoon, sending strong tremors across parts of Mindanao, including Soccsksargen, as heavy rains continued to pour over Koronadal City.
In Koronadal City, the shaking lasted several seconds, with the ground appearing to sway in a rocking motion.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake struck at 4:07 p.m., with its epicenter located 42 kilometers south of Balut Island in the municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

The quake had a depth of 10 kilometers.
Phivolcs’ initial bulletin said instrumental Intensity IV was recorded in Alabel and Malapatan in Sarangani; Tboli and Lake Sebu in South Cotabato; General Santos City; and Palimbang in Sultan Kudarat.
Intensity III was recorded in Banga, South Cotabato; Maitum, Sarangani; Lebak, Sultan Kudarat; Kidapawan City, North Cotabato; Digos City and Matanao, Davao del Sur; and Sarangani, Jose Abad Santos and Santa Maria, Davao Occidental.
Meanwhile, Intensity II was recorded in Norala, Surallah, and Santo Niño in South Cotabato; Isulan, Esperanza, Kalamansig and President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat; Maasim in Sarangani; Davao City; Magsaysay in Davao del Sur; and Carmen, M’lang and President Roxas in North Cotabato.

Intensity I was also recorded in Tantangan, South Cotabato, and several areas in North Cotabato, Bukidnon and Davao de Oro.
Phivolcs said the tremor was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake off Sarangani and the magnitude 6.5 earthquake off Davao Occidental recorded in June 2026.
