IDF bars hikers from entering parts of northern Israel over Sukkot

The restricted areas - IDF training grounds - are located throughout the Golan Heights, the Carmel region, Ramot Menashe, and the Netofa area.

The IDF on Thursday issued a statement barring people from entering certain designated military training zones in northern Israel over Sukkot.

These training grounds are located throughout the Golan Heights, the Carmel region, Ramot Menashe and the Netofa area.

According to the statement, the areas are closed to the public "to allow security forces to carry out their missions," but can be accessed if hikers plan ahead.

Hikers can coordinate entry prior to visiting

Civilians who enter restricted military zones will be endangering themselves, the IDF explained, adding that hikers can coordinate with the military in certain locations to enter those restricted areas.

The Sukkot festival involves spending time outdoors, celebrating the fall harvest by eating (and sometimes camping) in the sukkah. Many Israelis spend the days of Hol Hamoed outside, hiking.

Hikers who encounter shrapnel, ammunition, or a suspicious object during their travels are asked to stay away from it for their own safety, the IDF said.
