A highly-anticipated new sci-fi release coming January 2027 just scored a major co-sign—from none other than The Martian and Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir.

Weir has been having an incredible 2026 - Project Hail Mary has been smashing box office records since its release in March of this year, with such immediate success that it extended its box office run. As the movie left theaters in summer, it had surpassed $680 million worldwide, including an incredible $343 million domestically, and has led to the creation of a mixed-reality VR Game, Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars.

Now, the sci-fi legend has praised a new book releasing in only a few months:

A funny and distressingly realistic depiction of how Silicon Valley would handle time machines as a consumer product... Propelled by awesome characters and inventive twists—and a bittersweet ending that I can't stop thinking about.

The book, Paradox Inc by Forrest Brazeal, reimagines time travel as a product of tech - and while it's a very different style of sci-fi to Weir's more extraterrestrial novels, there are parallels that make this a must-read for Weir fans.

Everything We Know About Paradox Inc.

Paradox Inc. is the debut novel from Forrest Brazeal, and is set to release January 5, 2027 via Ballantine Books, a Penguin Random House imprint. In the months leading up to its release, the novel has received its fair share of buzz. The novel was picked up for a film adaptation at Universal Pictures in August of this year, with Daniel Roher (Navalny (2022), Tuner (2026)) attached to write and direct and Matthew Robinson (The Last House (2026)) attached to co-write the script.

Paradox Inc. takes place in a near-future Silicon Valley where time travel has become the tech industry's latest obsession. At the center of the story is the Bleb 1, the world's first consumer time-travel device. While the technology has the potential to fundamentally change the world, its earliest users have considerably less ambitious ideas, traveling into the past to get their hands on discontinued snacks, settle grudges, and even kill earlier versions of themselves for social media clout.

The novel follows three people caught up in the resulting time-travel boom. Engineer Davis Kennedy is introduced to the industry when he interviews for a mysterious startup—only to discover that the interview itself is taking place in the past. He eventually takes the job and finds himself working for a billionaire founder whose plans for this technology turn dangerous. Elsewhere, Gloria, an executive at a rival company, attempts to contain the chaos created by the new industry, while journalist Lena begins investigating Paradox Inc. and uncovers a much larger conspiracy.

As companies race to monetize time travel, the consequences begin extending far beyond Silicon Valley, threatening the timeline itself. Paradox Inc. tells the story through rotating perspectives and a mockumentary-style oral history, using interviews and corporate documents to piece together how the industry's latest tech bubble spiraled dramatically out of control.

An Insider's View of Silicon Valley and the Attention Economy

Brazeal's professional background in technology makes him uniquely equipped to tell this story. A first-time novelist, Brazeal spent most of his career working in the tech industry, leading Google Cloud's technical storytelling team and serving on the computer science advisory board at the University of South Carolina Upstate. He is also the co-founder of Freeman & Forrest, an influencer marketing and media agency that connects tech companies with popular online creators and tech experts. This gives Paradox Inc. a credibility to its commentary that not all science fiction books can claim. Brazeal was also working at Google during the height of the AI and cryptocurrency booms, giving him a firsthand view of the hype cycles his novel describes.

Silicon Valley Criticism Is Having A Moment

Book shelf with assorted sci-fi and science texts

Over the past few years, Silicon Valley has increasingly become a subject of criticism across books, film, and television, as writers and filmmakers turn their attention to the people and companies shaping modern technology. Classic sci-fi authors like Isaac Asimov have written about AI and other technologies since the 1950s, and now that the technology has finally come to fruition, contemporary authors have started treating AI less as a distant machine uprising than as the newest way for people to chase power, profit, and control.

Paradox Inc. arrives at a moment when filmmakers, artists, and authors are taking a closer, often critical look at today's tech industry and what its power could mean for the future. The novel is scheduled for release just weeks before Luca Guadagnino's Artificial, a comedy-drama about the firing and rehiring of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, played by Andrew Garfield. It also arrives only months ahead of Aaron Sorkin's The Social Reckoning, a follow-up to 2010's The Social Network, starring Jeremy Strong, Mikey Madison, and Jeremy Allen White, and centers on Facebook's 2021 internal document leak and revelations that the company knew about some of its platform's harmful societal effects.

With the stamp of approval from one of science fiction's most popular authors and a film adaptation already in development, Paradox Inc. has built notable momentum ahead of its release. Whether that attention translates into lasting success remains to be seen, but the novel's focus on Silicon Valley, technological disruption, and the race to commercialize the next big thing places it squarely within a broader cultural conversation already unfolding across books and film.
