Murder drops 5.9% in South Africa as police flag major crime driver

South Africa recorded 343 fewer murders between April and June 2026 compared with the same period last year, according to the latest crime statistics.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) released its first-quarter figures for the 2026/27 financial year on Friday.

Murder dropped by 5.9% year-on-year, continuing the downward trend highlighted by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia.

“We have recorded notable decreases in several of the country’s most serious contact crimes,” Cachalia said.

Despite the decline, he warned that violent crime remained a serious concern.

“Every murder remains one too many. Every victim deserves justice.”

Police flag alcohol as major driver of violence

Cachalia singled out alcohol as a major factor behind murders and serious assaults.

He said SAPS leadership reviews crime patterns every Monday, with violence repeatedly peaking at night and over weekends.

Many incidents occur in and around liquor outlets, including unlicensed establishments.

“A very substantial proportion of our murders and serious assaults involve people who were drinking, killing or injuring people they knew, often over trivial arguments,” he said.

Cachalia said many killings were not linked to organised crime or armed robbery.

“It is ordinary people, drunk, with access to a weapon. We cannot arrest our way out of that.”

He called for stronger enforcement of liquor licensing laws and municipal by-laws.

Serious and violent crime declines

The latest figures also show declines across several major crime categories.

Contact crime fell by 2.3%, with 3 334 fewer cases recorded compared with the same period last year.

Sexual offences decreased by 0.8%, representing 98 fewer cases. Rape fell by 0.3%, while attempted sexual offences declined by 1.8%.

Robbery with aggravating circumstances recorded one of the largest declines.

Cases dropped from 31 475 between April and June 2025 to 26 839 during the same period this year – a decrease of 14.7%, or 4 636 cases.

Carjackings fell by 18.2%, robberies at residential premises by 17.6% and robberies at non-residential premises by 11.8%.

Trio crimes declined by 16.4%, with 2 156 fewer cases recorded.

140 high-crime precincts targeted

Police will now direct additional resources to 140 high-crime police station precincts across the country.

The stations will receive targeted operational support, increased oversight and improved resource allocation.

SAPS also plans to strengthen detective services and crime intelligence while stepping up operations against organised crime, extortion, illegal mining and gang violence.

Cachalia said crime remained concentrated in a relatively small number of precincts, making targeted deployments necessary.
