‘Coven Academy’ Renewed for Season 2 at Disney

Disney’s supernatural young adult series “Coven Academy” has been renewed for a second season.

Created by Tim Federle, the series follows “three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock peers at an elite magic boarding school where power is currency, secrets are lethal and attraction is a liability,” per the official logline, which continues: Caught between ancient supernatural wars and forbidden love interests, the coven must decide how far they’re willing to go to protect their city — and themselves.” The cast includes Malina Pauli Weissman, Malachi Barton, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass, Louis Thresher, Tiffani Thiessen and Devon Sawa.

Season 1 is comprised of 21 short “chapters,” nine of which premiered on Freeform on Oct. 1. The rest of the season dropped on Disney+ and Hulu the following day. “Coven Academy” was initially intended to be the first young adult series to air on Disney Channel, before shifting to sit alongside more mature content on Freeform and streaming.

According to Disney, Season 1 hit 20.3 million hours watched globally in its first three weeks of availability on Disney+ and Hulu. The first chapter of the season was also released on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, where it racked up more than 30 million views. Per Nielsen, “Coven Academy” was the most-watched streaming series among teens age 12-17 through its premiere weekend, and in the top five among all viewers when measuring by views (as opposed to hours watched). Nielsen data also shows that it was frequently co-viewed, with half of viewers age 12-17 and close to two-thirds of viewers age 6-11 watching alongside an adult.

Federle executive produces “Coven Academy” alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row, and Bronwyn North-Reist. The series is produced by Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions in association with Disney Kids & Family.

“I don’t want to tell another straight-up mom mystery again, but I think there is something fun to explore in what makes a mother and daughter so dangerous when they’re together. And who would be most threatened by that?” Federle said to Variety in an interview where he gives an in-depth breakdown of his ideas for Season 2.
