Woman killed after being run over by trailer

ALOR STAR: A cafe worker was killed after she fell from her motorcycle and was run over by a trailer in an accident at a traffic light junction near a shopping mall on Jalan Lencong Barat here yesterday.
Nur Atikah Umairah Suhaimi, 21, from Kampung Alor Pulai, Mukim Kangkong, died at the scene from severe injuries in the 5.50pm incident.
Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali said police received a call from a member of the public about the road accident involving the two vehicles.
He said preliminary investigations showed that the trailer and motorcycle were travelling in the same direction, from Masjid Aman towards the shopping mall and Taman Desa Seraya.
"When they reached the traffic light junction, the traffic light turned green and both vehicles began turning right.
"Suddenly, the trailer, which was on the right, grazed and hit the victim's motorcycle.
"The impact caused the motorcyclist to fall before she was run over by the trailer," he said in a statement today.
He said a urine screening test found that the 40-year-old lorry driver from Langkawi was not under the influence of drugs.
"However, investigations also found that he had five summonses, of which only one, involving an expired Motor Vehicle Licence, remained unpaid, while the other four had been settled.
"Police are also looking for witnesses who saw the incident to assist in the investigation.
"The vehicles involved have been detained for further inspection and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
