60 Years Later, DC Is Threatening To Permanently Depower One Of Their Most Iconic Villains

It’s difficult to determine how sincere the stakes are in any DC or Marvel grandiose comic book crossover event, let alone Batman: Bad Seeds, the 26-issue, two-month-long event that is centered around Poison Ivy and takes place in one night in-universe. Batman: Bad Seeds has teased Poison Ivy’s death, for instance, and that an ancient flora overgrowth will reclaim Gotham City by sunrise.

Nobody reading this event’s prelude, core, and tie-in issues as they hit store shelves is sincerely entertaining the idea that Gotham will become a terraformed, uninhabitable environment and potentially governed by the Parliament of Trees. Sadly, while it was already highly unlikely that this event was actually going to go through with killing such an iconic DC supervillain, we know what Poison Ivy’s fate will be due to the spoiler-laden nature of solicitations and the promotional blurbs that are unveiled for each issue.

Poison Ivy Is A Flora Goddess No More

In Detective Comics #1113, Officer Hall risked her career (and her life) when she thwarted the dispersal of a herbicide that the Gotham City Police Department’s Commissioner Vandal Savage knew would be toxic enough to kill thousands of people. Savage’s intent was for the herbicide to “tear Gotham’s mayor out by the roots,” and yet this latest issue of Tom Taylor’s Detective Comics run has confirmed that she would not die by the commissioner’s hand.

This didn’t necessarily mean that she was spared, as the solicitations for Poison Ivy #49 and Batman: Batman Seeds - Sunrise #1, the two final chapters of this event, both suggested that she might not make it out alive. However, it seems as if the solicitation for Poison Ivy #49 was quite literal, spoiling that “Poison Ivy finds herself stripped of all her power.” Newly released, the solicitation for Poison Ivy #50 reads as follows:

A NEW ERA OF POISON IVY’S SAGA BEGINS! Pamela Isley has been abandoned. Her friends, her allies, her patrons, even her powers are gone — trapped within the walls of the Arkham Towers facility, Pamela finds herself in an utterly ordinary mortal body. Batman wants her to seek redemption, to embrace who she is deep down and cast aside her villainous ways. But who exactly is Pamela Isley at the end of the day? Is she a terrorist, a villain, a goddess, a queen, or simply a scientist? Her new doctors certainly believe that she’s just like you and me... But you know better, don’t you? Ivy Will Soon Be In The Clutches Of Dr. Annika Zeller

G. Willow Wilson’s Poison Ivy run will apparently mark the beginning of a startling new era for Poison Ivy—Dr. Pamela Isley, rather—as a patient at Arkham Towers, officially confirming that she isn’t dying anytime soon. It’ll be fascinating to see how she loses her powers, as well as how she grapples with the knowledge that she’s back in an “utterly ordinary mortal body.”

Maybe more intriguing is that she’ll presumably be in the care of Batman’s Dr. Annika Zeller, whose Crown of Storms device has supposedly successfully treated classic villains like Killer Croc and Joker. If Pamela undergoes this same treatment, she may come out the other side of it a much different woman, regardless of whether her powers are only gone temporarily (it’d be strange for Poison Ivy to have her own book while she’s mild-mannered Pamela Isley, implying that this is not a permanent nerf). Moreover, if Pamela is neither the mayor nor Poison Ivy, perhaps she and Harley Quinn can truly be together again.

Poison Ivy #50 is scheduled to be released on December 2, 2026.

Inducted into Batman's rogues gallery in the 1960s, Poison Ivy is a metahuman who terrorizes Gotham with her poisonous touch and control over plant life. A misanthropic eco-terrorist, Poison Ivy is also depicted as an anti-hero, using her powers in attempts to regrow the environment in the wake of pollution and deforestation. Together with her lover Harley Quinn, the two are always ready to wreak havoc in Gotham.
