Pokémon’s Next Eeveelution Design May Be Its Darkest Yet

Eevee has become one of Pokémon's most recognizable and beloved creatures in the franchise's 30-year history, thanks largely to its unique ability to evolve into a wide range of different forms and the fact it's absolutely adorable. Across the series, Eevee has received eight evolutions covering Fire, Water, Electric, Psychic, Dark, Grass, Ice, and Fairy types, each giving the Pokémon a completely different identity and playstyle.

Yet despite Eevee's enduring popularity, Pokémon hasn't introduced a brand-new Eeveelution since Sylveon debuted with Pokémon X & Y back in 2013. That long gap has been the fuel for years of speculation over which unused type could come next. Dragon and Steel are popular possibilities, while Poison, Fighting, Rock, Bug, and even specific regional variants could open the door to some especially creative designs.

However, a Ghost-type evolution may have the most intriguing potential of all, and with the right design, lore, and evolution method, it could easily become the darkest Eeveelution Pokémon has ever created.

Ghost-Type Eeveelution Would Be A Game-Changer

A Ghost-type Eeveelution would fit surprisingly well within the rules Pokémon has already established for Eevee. The species has historically evolved through special conditions tied to stones, friendship, time of day, location, or even knowing a particular move, so a darker evolution method would feel like a natural extension of that formula.

A Dusk Stone would be the most obvious option, although Pokémon could easily introduce something more thematic, such as evolving Eevee at night in a haunted location or after it interacts with a certain Ghost-type Pokémon tied to a unique storyline.

There is also plenty of precedent for Ghost Pokémon having unusual or unsettling origins. Several Ghost types are tied to abandoned objects, lingering spirits, curses, or death-adjacent folklore, which gives designers a lot of freedom to make a Ghost Eeveelution visually distinct without breaking from the franchise's established tone.

The potential and openness to being adapted is a major reason the Ghost Eevee concept has remained popular among fans for years, especially since Eevee still lacks evolutions for more than half of Pokémon's 18 types. Fans have come up with countless names for the hypothetical evolution as well, with Spectreon being one of the most common, while Phanteon, Ghouleon, Haunteon, and the more straightforward Ghosteon have all appeared in fan art and discussions over the years.

Whatever name Pokémon eventually chooses, a Ghost-type Eeveelution could lean into a more haunting eye shape and stare, spectral fur, wispy markings, or even a partially translucent body, making it one of the most visually striking additions to the Eevee family. There are several distinct fan concepts out there that more than prove the concept would be a favorite, especially among fans who love Ghost 'Mon in general.

Will We Ever See A New Eeveelution?

Sylveon's 2013 debut certainly doesn't have to mark the end of Eeveelutions as we know them, although Pokémon has now gone several generations without expanding them. New forms arrived fairly regularly during the franchise's earlier history, with Eeveelutions introduced in Generations 1, 2, 4, and 6 before the streak suddenly stopped. Game Freak has never provided a clear explanation for that decision, and there has been no official statement declaring that Eevee's evolutionary line is complete either.

The closest commentary came from longtime Pokémon designer Ken Sugimori, who was asked in a 2018 interview whether Eevee could receive additional forms. His joking response, asking whether fans wanted something like a Bug-type Eevee, was deliberately noncommittal and left the possibility open. Junichi Masuda has also acknowledged the enormous amount of fan enthusiasm surrounding Eevee, including the character's extensive fan art and popularity, which helped inspire its starring role in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!

Pokémon Winds & Waves will begin Generation 10 in 2027 and introduce an entirely new collection of Pokémon, giving Game Freak another obvious opportunity to revisit Eevee, though the setting would suggest we'd likely get a Flying type before Ghost. For now, however, only the three new starter Pokémon have been officially unveiled, with no new Eeveelution confirmed as of September 2026.
