My marriage… With Dr Olanrewaju Olasupo

Dr Olanrewaju Olasupo and his wife

How did you meet your wife?

I met my wife, Adenike, at one of my boss’ offices, and we started talking. From there, it became a stronger relationship before we eventually got married.

What are the qualities that attracted you to her?

At that time, we looked out for how cultured a lady was. Although beauty is part of it, it is not the main thing. She is religious, beautiful and well-mannered. You see, we held morals and values in high esteem.

How did you ask her out?

After collecting her number, we started talking. The funniest part was that my boss had also noticed how I was looking at her whenever I came over. He also collected her phone number for me, not knowing I had already collected it. He told me that he saw the way I was looking at her and that he had her number. I laughed and told him I already had it. So, we started talking, and from there, I asked her out. I told her that I thought she was the person I had been looking for. One thing led to another, and today, the rest is history.

Was finance an important factor before you married?

At that time, my salary was N18,000. My wife knew my salary was not enough but still went ahead to marry me because she knew this guy had a future and she was ready to follow through. But how many ladies today are ready for such?

What event was the most memorable for you on your wedding day?

The moment when they pronounced us husband and wife was the most memorable. You know, this is somebody who is beautiful and has all the qualities, and finally marrying her was special. When the Imam said we should put the rings on our hands, it was interesting.

How has being a husband and father changed you?

To the glory of God. Before, you could see money and spend it anyhow, but now you are responsible for people, so you cannot do such things. In those days, you could travel by 10 pm and sleep anywhere if you could not make it back, but now you cannot do that because people are waiting for you at home. Now, we do things but consider the family first. But if I am alone and there is no wife or children, I can do anything. Now, things have changed.

What advice do you have for youths planning to marry?

That advice is serious because even some guys are afraid to get married today. I think the values that women of 10 years ago possessed are not as common in this new generation. They are not ready to endure situations with any guy. If I am going to advise anybody, I will advise a lady to look for a guy with a vision who is ready to achieve it. For the guys, they should always pursue their goals. Don’t say that because you want to get married, you should drop out of school. Education is not a scam.
