Djed Spence issues emotional farewell to Tottenham as £30m exit confirmed

Spence has signed a five-year deal, tying him to Inter until the summer of 2031.

Spence enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign as England reached the semi-finals, and leaves the club in search of more regular first-team minutes. He spent much of last season playing second fiddle to Pedro Porro, who signed a new long-term contract in the summer.

The summer arrival of Andy Robertson would also have limited his chances further on the opposite flank.

Writing on his social media after the move was confirmed, Spence reminisced on Spurs’ Europa League final triumph in 2025, in which he made a brief late cameo.

“A special chapter comes to an end,” he said. “It’s been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I’ll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao.

“Thanks to all the staff members who’ve helped me along the way, the players who’ve become family & most importantly, thank you to the fans.

“Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart.”

Waiting for Spence at Inter is his England team-mate John Stones, who joined the club as a free agent last month. His is the second high-profile departure from Tottenham’s back line of the weekend, after Cristian Romero sealed a transfer to Atletico Madrid.

Spence joined Tottenham from Middlesbrough in 2022, and he departs having scored twice in 85 first-team appearances.

This move will herald the full-back’s second career stint in Italy, after he enjoyed a short-term loan at Genoa in 2024.

Speaking to Inter’s in-house media channels after putting pen to paper on his new contract, Spence added: “This is a huge Club and a big step for me and my family. I'm over the moon to be here and I'm ready to get started.”

Of his Genoa stint, he added: “It was a special experience, and now I'm happy to be coming back as an Inter player.”
