Indonesia, Malaysia aim to accelerate higher education pact
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to accelerate work on a memorandum of understanding on higher education cooperation, Indonesia's Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto said.
About 11,000 Indonesian students currently study in Malaysia, underscoring close educational ties and the importance of expanding opportunities for young people, Yuliarto said.
The two countries are committed to completing the draft memorandum, Yuliarto said in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.
He also proposed establishing a Joint Indonesia-Malaysia Academic Consortium to expand academic exchanges, joint programs and knowledge-sharing among higher education institutions.
Yuliarto said the proposed consortium would strengthen ties between institutions while creating broader opportunities for academic exchanges, joint programs and knowledge-sharing.
Bilateral education cooperation has a long history, including a 1972 agreement covering education and culture, he said.
Yuliarto said the agreement provides a foundation for expanding cooperation and enriching educational experiences for young people in both countries.
He expressed hope that cooperation in higher education, science and technology would provide a foundation for developing new areas of collaboration.
Such cooperation could support public welfare and contribute to a more harmonious, prosperous and resilient ASEAN based on solidarity, mutual respect and shared benefits, he said.
Yuliarto conveyed greetings from President Prabowo Subianto to Malaysia's government and people on Malaysia's National Day on Sept. 16, 2026.
He also praised Malaysia's development progress, attributing it to the resilience, hard work and aspirations of its people.
