Serie A | Lazio 1-0 Genoa: Frattesi the hero once again

Davide Frattesi scored the winner again for Lazio in their second Serie A victory of the season, squeezing past Genoa 1-0.

The Biancocelesti had a mixed bag so far this season, crashing out of the Coppa Italia to Mantova, then earning a 1-0 victory away to Bologna. Gennaro Gattuso had an injury crisis to deal with, missing Patric, Alessio Romagnoli, Danilo Cataldi, Samuel Gigot, Adam Marusic, Luca Pellegrini and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Davide Frattesi, who scored in Bologna, therefore got his first start, with new buy Andrea Pinamonti on the bench and the return of Nuno Tavares.

Genoa opened their season losing 2-0 at home to Napoli, with Hamed Traore, Elias Havel, Franz-Ethan Meichtry and Lorenzo Venturino still on the treatment table, but new buy Milutin Osmajic was in the squad after leaving Preston North End.

The Stadio Olimpico was practically deserted, as the Lazio ultras continue their boycott of home games in protest at President Claudio Lotito.

Danilho Doekhi nodded a corner wide at the back post, but it was that man Frattesi again to break the deadlock. He was in the right place at the right time, ready to swing in from 10 yards after Nuno Tavares broke down the left to pull back.

The injury crisis got even worse for Lazio, as Nicolò Rovella suddenly pulled up with a calf problem and had to be replaced by Reda Belahyane.

The pair who created the goal combined again, this time Frattesi standing up a cross from the left for a Nuno Tavares header that thumped the far post.

Mattia Zaccagni tried to pounce on a horrible Alessandro Marcandalli back-pass, only for Justin Bijlow to scramble it clear, then Genoa risked the equaliser when two players failed to connect with the Brooke Norton-Cuffy cross at the back post.

Vitinha was denied by another big Doekhi block, while Zaccagni blasted just over from the edge of the area, but Doekhi should’ve done better when acrobatically volleying over from close range on the Gustav Isaksen assist.

Meichtry came on and should’ve scored within 60 seconds, but fired wide after chesting down the ball to run into the box.

Andrea Pinamonti made his Lazio debut in the final minutes, and nearly scored when he turned on a sixpence to graze the base of the upright.

Mandas was forced to fly in stoppages to fingertip the Morten Frendrup header out from under the bar.
