1 killed, 4 hurt as truck falls off ravine in Zamboanga del Sur town

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — A 63-year-old passenger was killed while four others were injured after a blue cargo truck lost its brakes and plunged into a deep ravine.
The accident happened along a downhill road in Barangay Kitaan Dagat, Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur on Thursday afternoon, local police said.
Police Captain Derf Jay Maquinta, spokesperson of the Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office, reported that the mishap occurred at around 12:55 p.m. in Purok Tugas, Barangay Kitaan Dagat.

The vehicle, a blue Isuzu truck driven by a 43-year-old man, was carrying four passengers—all working as truck helpers, who are from Luuk town in Sulu province.

According to police reports, the truck was traveling from Zamboanga City toward Barangay Limamawan in Kumalarang when it encountered mechanical failure while negotiating a steep downhill stretch of the road.
Investigators said the truck’s brakes reportedly malfunctioned as it descended the sloping road, causing the driver to lose control of the steering wheel.
The vehicle veered off the road before plunging into a ravine.
The 63-year-old passenger died on the scene due to fatal injuries sustained from the impact.

Meanwhile, emergency responders rushed the surviving driver and the three other injured truck helpers to the Rural Health Unit of Kumalarang for medical treatment.
