Switzerland coach warns Romano after Italy switch: ‘Could’ve played 20 in a row for us’

Alessandro Romano has already earned his first two caps for the Italy national team at senior level this international break, but Switzerland U21 coach Alexander Frei has not taken too kindly to his switch of international allegiance, warning that he ‘might not be called up again for another five years’. 

Frei issues Romano warning after Italy debut

Romano was born in Switzerland to Italian parents and grew up representing Switzerland and youth international level, from the U16s up to the U20s. He formally changed his international allegiance earlier this month, confirming his intention to represent Italy at senior level. 

The Cagliari midfielder was then included in Roberto Mancini’s 34-man squad for the extra-long international break in September and October, and was handed his full debut at the base of midfield for Italy’s recent 2-0 defeat at home against Belgium. He was also brought on off the bench in Monday’s 4-1 victory over Turkey. 

His change of international allegiance has not gone down too well by those in the Switzerland set-up, however. It has already been reported that Romano may need to repay around €100,000 to the Swiss FA following his involvement in the nation’s ‘Footuro’ programme, aimed at giving extra coaching and help across the board for particularly talented young players. 

Now, Switzerland U21 head coach Frei has hit out at Romano as well, warning that he would have been a guaranteed fixture of the Switzerland national team, whereas with Italy, he might be left waiting several years for his next opportunity. 

“It’s not a defeat for Switzerland,” Frei insisted when discussing Romano’s decision to represent Italy in an interview with Swiss outlet RSI. 

“A lot has been done for him, but when he was a youngster, he probably went to sleep wearing the Italy shirt rather than the Swiss one.” 

Frei has warned: “Romano must be aware of the consequences. With Italy, he could play one game and then not be called up again for another five years, whereas with Switzerland, he might have played 20 in a row.”
