PONTIAN, Oct 10 — The Public Works Department (JKR) will extend the operating hours of its streetlights by up to two hours during haze conditions to help improve visibility for road users.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the measure, implemented through JKR’s Electrical Engineering Branch, was prompted by haze conditions that had reduced visibility and increased the risk of accidents.

He said streetlights using timer systems currently typically operated from 7 pm to 7 am.

“Each streetlight has a timer setting that can be adjusted. During haze conditions, the operating hours can be extended by up to two hours.

“We will also refer the matter to local authorities, such as municipal councils and city halls, to encourage them to take similar measures,” he told reporters after visiting the family of three siblings who died in an accident at Kampung Parit Haji Siraj here today.

The three siblings, aged eight to 18, were killed on Thursday after the motorcycle they were on collided with a lorry on Jalan Parit Haji Sirat in Kayu Ara Pason amid hazy weather and limited visibility.

Ahmad also advised road users to exercise greater caution and ensure safe visibility when driving in hazy conditions. — Bernama
