Alfonso Gomez-Rejon To Direct Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s New Disney+ Series ‘Afterlife With Archie’

EXCLUSIVE: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Hunters) will direct the pilot of Afterlife with Archie, which was greenlit for a TV series adaptation on Disney+ in July. Gomez-Rejon will also direct the second episode and will serve as executive producer of the episodes.
Based on the bestselling comic book series by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, Afterlife with Archie turns the all-American town of Riverdale into a zombie-overrun apocalypse — where the only thing scarier than the undead is trying to survive your teenage years. When a supernatural spell from a certain teen witch backfires, unleashing an army of the possessed dead upon Riverdale, Archie and his friends must fight to stay alive, testing the friendships, romances and loyalties that have always held them together.
Afterlife with Archie is executive produced by Aguirre-Sacasa and Jimmy Gibbons via Muckle Man Productions and its overall deal with WBTV; Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman via Berlanti Productions and its overall deal with WBTV; and Jon Goldwater for Archie Comics Studios.
In addition to his directing work on the film Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and the Prime Video series Hunters, Gomez-Rejon is also a frequent collaborator with Martin Scorsese, including the upcoming Aldeas: A New Story, a new documentary featuring Pope Francis’ last on-camera interview. Additional credits include the Benedict Cumberbatch film The Current War. Gomez-Rejon also received an Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries or Movie Emmy nomination for American Horror Story: Coven.
The director currently has work lined up on the Apple TV series Stowaway, starring Oscar Isaac as Juan Carlos Guzmán; the film The Fortress of Solitude; and the TV adaptation of Edna Ferber’s book Giant at Amazon. He is repped by CAA, Untitled and JSSK.
