Indonesia strengthens bilateral diplomacy at UN General Assembly

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono utilized the 81st UN General Assembly session to strengthen bilateral ties and advance national interests through a series of meetings with friendly nations and strategic partners in New York, United States.

The series of meetings, held on the sidelines of the opening of the General Debate on Tuesday (Sept 22), focused on expanding cooperation across various sectors while reaffirming Indonesia's active contribution to maintaining global peace.

"These meetings discussed efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, as well as various regional and global issues of mutual concern," Sugiono said in a statement on Wednesday (Sept 23).

He stressed that Indonesia will continue to push for existing cooperation potential to be followed up on, delivering concrete benefits for national development and the Indonesian people.

During his schedule in New York, FM Sugiono held bilateral meetings with UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen, as well as a pull-aside meeting with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

In the meeting with UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral partnership through the New Strategic Partnership to deliver direct positive impacts for the people of both nations.

Meanwhile, discussions with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul focused on strengthening bilateral ties ahead of the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Germany diplomatic relations next year.

The dialogue with Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen highlighted the strengthening of partnership within multilateral forums, including addressing the issue of Palestine.

Following their bilateral talk, the foreign ministers of Indonesia and the Netherlands held a trilateral meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix.

The trilateral session addressed the strengthening of UN peacekeeping missions and preparations for the 2027 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial (UNPM), which Indonesia and the Netherlands will co-host in Jakarta.

Beyond bilateral diplomacy, FM Sugiono met with Rebeca Grynspan—Costa Rica’s nominee for UN Secretary-General—to exchange views on pressing global challenges and strengthening the UN's future role.

Indonesia also leveraged the series of intensive diplomatic engagements in New York to gather international support for its bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term.

On the sidelines of the General Debate opening, Sugiono met with representatives from various friendly nations and partners, including Brunei Darussalam, Laos, Romania, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Canada, Colombia and the European Union.

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, this intense diplomatic activity in New York underscores Indonesia's commitment to expanding international partnerships while advancing its national interests at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
