PT PAL prepares upgrades for aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi

Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - State-owned shipbuilder PT PAL Indonesia is preparing maintenance and modernization capabilities in partnership with Italian firm Fincantieri to adapt the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi for Indonesian Navy operations, officials said Tuesday.

"Ship modernization demands a comprehensive understanding of the platform's actual condition, the characteristics of installed systems, and the user's operational needs," PT PAL CEO Kaharuddin Djenod said in a statement.

Djenod explained that modernizing the 40-year-old vessel involves thorough condition assessments, identifying obsolete technologies, and integrating legacy platforms with new sensor, propulsion, and weapon systems.

The project will progress through inspection, engineering, scope definition, system integration, and final testing.

Collaborating with original manufacturer Fincantieri will also facilitate technology transfer to enhance domestic engineering expertise, Djenod added.

Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali previously noted that the Giuseppe Garibaldi requires adaptation to align its engines, electronics, and operational doctrine with Indonesia's tropical maritime environment.

The vessel, set to be renamed KRI Sriwijaya, will serve as Indonesia's first aircraft carrier following its official handover on Sept. 24.
