Neelam Sirohi finished her campaign at the Wrestling World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, with a silver medal on Wednesday after losing to defending champion Yui Susaki in the 50kg final.
Japan’s Susaki, who already has three World Championship titles to her name - once in the 48kg division and twice in the 50kg category - defeated the 26-year-old Neelam by VFA (Victory By Fall) in the summit clash to clinch yet another gold.
Nevertheless, Neelam created history by becoming only the second Indian woman in history to clinch a silver medal at the prestigious tournament. Anshu Malik had also finished as runner-up five years in Oslo, Norway, in the 57kg category.
Later in the day, Kajal Dhochak will meet Ukraine’s Anastasiya Alpyeyeva in the 76kg final.
