Mike Flanagan's classic, innovative horror movie will arrive on Netflix at the perfect time, right before the filmmaker's next big projects. Flanagan's movies and TV shows have made his work a cornerstone of horror filmmaking over the last decade. From his critically acclaimed Netflix dramas like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, to movie adaptations of Stephen King's work like Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game, Flanagan has made a name for himself in the horror space. But one of his best movies is a fully original film from a decade ago.

That movie is Hush, a 2016 horror thriller starring Kate Siegel as Maddie Young, an author who lost her ability to hear and speak due to meningitis at a young age. Following the successful publication of her horror novel, her house is broken into by a killer (John Gallagher Jr.) who plans to psychologically break her before killing her. However, he's unaware of just how capable of survival she truly is. Reviews for Hush were positive upon its release, the film currently holding a Certified Fresh 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mike Flanagan's Hush Is Coming Back To Netflix

Hush was originally released as a Netflix original in 2016, but was removed from the streaming service in 2021 following the expiration of its distribution license with the platform. The movie was later released on VOD and physical distribution in 2024, remaining the only way to watch the film for quite some time. However, after five years of being off the platform, Hush is finally returning to Netflix on October 1, 2026. It comes just in time for the Halloween season, delivering an early Flanagan fright to audiences at the perfect time.

The movie's arrival on Netflix also comes ahead of Flanagan's next big releases. The filmmaker served as showrunner for the upcoming Carrie TV show, set for release on October 8, 2026. He wrote the pilot episode, directed four of the eight episodes, and serves as executive producer as well. Flanagan also co-wrote the script for Clayface, the next movie in the DC Universe, set for theatrical release on October 23. It's a big month for the filmmaker, made stronger by Hush's re-release on Netflix.

The Horror-Thriller Has A Few Unique Twists For The Genre

Hush is an innovative horror movie because of its unique approach to the slasher genre, particularly when it comes to the protagonist and antagonist. Maddie's inability to speak or hear makes her a unique protagonist, forced to utilize her other senses to combat the killer at her door. This leads to a number of unique confrontations, all sequestered inside her home, adding an isolated feeling to the story. The killer is unmasked quite early, too, adding characterization that further develops his role in the story.

Since the movie is finally returning to streaming after five years, Hush seems poised to be the perfect Halloween slasher movie for Netflix subscribers. With Flanagan a much bigger name in the genre than when he made the movie, it's a positive way to reminisce about the success he's built ahead of his huge releases in the coming weeks.
