EXCLUSIVE: Janus Films has acquired all rights in North America and the UK/Ireland to Alfonso Cuarón’s classic fourth feature, Y Tu Mamá También, which has been restored in 4K to mark the 25th anniversary of its premiere.

The new 4K print will be released theatrically in the summer of 2027.

Y Tu Mamá También launched at the Venice Film Festival in 2001, where it won the Best Screenplay Award. The following year, it was nominated for the Best Screenplay Oscar, the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, and the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Not in the English Language.

The film follows a pair of horny Mexico City teenagers (played by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna), who, after their girlfriends jet off to Italy for the summer, become bewitched by an older Spanish woman (Maribel Verdú) they meet at a wedding. When she agrees to accompany them on a trip to a faraway beach, the three form an increasingly intense and sensual alliance that ultimately strips them both physically and emotionally bare.

The title launched Bernal and Luna’s international careers along with Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, who lensed the film, and, of course, Cuarón, who went on to win Academy Awards for Best Director (Roma), Best Editing (Gravity), Best Cinematography (Roma), and Best Foreign Language Film (Roma)

“Y Tu Mamá También remains very close to me, and it means a great deal to see it return to theaters 25 years later,” Cuarón said in a statement. “I’m especially excited to share the film with a new generation, while longtime viewers can experience it again in a new 4K restoration. I’m grateful to Janus Films for making that possible.”

The deal was negotiated between Janus Films and WME on behalf of the filmmakers.
