Sir Elton John has taken to Instagram to share his 'upset' with Watford's recent performances after the Hornets fell to a humiliating 4-0 defeat by rock-bottem Burnley on Saturday.

The legendary musician and former chairman of the Vicarage Road club, 79, expressed his concern over the team's recent decline - with Alessio Dionisi's side falling to defeat in their last three Championship contests.

Sir Elton, who oversaw the Hornets' most successful period in the club's history, said he felt 'really sorry' for the supporters who are suffering alongside him.

Replying to the club's full-time post on Instagram, he said: 'As a lifetime supporter of Watford FC, I am very upset and disappointed at the decline over the past few weeks.

'I really feel for the other supporters who have to watch this.'

The Burnley defeat was Watford's fifth loss in six games and puts the team just one point above the drop zone.

The players were met with a chorus of boos at the full-time whistle and manager Dionisi said he was 'sorry' after the latest setback.

'It's difficult to speak about it after a 4-0 loss, because I'm not happy about the first half, and I'm not happy about the second half,' he said.

'In the first half, we played with 11 players; in the second half, we played with five different players, and I'm not happy with either half.

'The problem now is the attitude, the team, the coach, everyone. Not one player or one striker. [You could say] it's better to play this player than someone else, but no, there is balance in this team.

'One month ago, it was different,' he said. 'Probably it's better to say only one thing: I'm sorry. I'm sorry for this result; I'm sorry for this match.

'I listen to a lot of words said about my players, but now it is probably better we say nothing, because I don't see one best player inside the team,' he remarked.

'To provide a good result, it's better to play with mentality, to play together, not to play for one player, because in this team, there isn't [one standout player].

'Probably in other teams, there is, but in this team, there isn't one. Unless I don't remember well, but I remember well... very well.'
