Final Fantasy Meets Octopath Traveler In New RPG Arriving In October

A new RPG is arriving in October, mixing Final Fantasy with Octopath Traveler, and if you’ve missed this game’s announcement, it’s about time you have it on your radar. Compared to Final Fantasy, Octopath Traveler is a pretty young franchise, but it has already established itself as a monument to the genre. The Square Enix series introduced the HD-2D style to the world, which has already been taken into several other franchises. The games in the series are great modern turn-based RPGs with pixel art, and they serve as an example for other titles, including those from classic franchises.

Now, all of that is colliding in a brand-new RPG that will arrive next month. As seen in the official Square Enix website, Final Fantasy Resonance will be released on October 22 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (via Steam). The upcoming title is an official entry in the Final Fantasy series, but it brings along with it the iconic HD-2D style pioneered by Octopath Traveler, but with a bunch of welcome changes that make it look even more gorgeous.

Officially the first HD-2D title in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy Resonance is an upcoming adaptation of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Final Fantasy Resonance was announced during this year’s Summer Game Fest, and it will bring forth turn-based combat with some Octopath Traveler mechanics – adapted for the FF franchise. Using different types of weapons and elemental abilities, you’ll be able to deplete enemies’ stagger bars, and upon doing so, deal even more damage to them, which is similar to the Break system.

In the gameplay for Final Fantasy Resonance, you’ll command the original characters from Brave Exvius, such as Rain and Lasswell, but you’ll also be able to summon Visions. These Visions are specters of iconic characters from other Final Fantasy games, including Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, Y’shtola from the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14, and more. Visions offer extra abilities for your characters during combat, enhancing the tactical choices you make during every fight.

A free demo for Final Fantasy Resonance is now available across all platforms on which the game will be released, and progress made during the demo will be carried over into the final game, should you purchase it. The demo is capped at character level 15, but this will allow you to experience several hours of gameplay, getting a grasp of the mechanics, visuals, and story. As someone who played Final Fantasy Resonance’s demo recently, I was genuinely impressed.

The game is doing something brand-new with the HD-2D visuals, including remarkable cutscenes that go well beyond the regular character interactions we’ve seen in other titles with the same art style. The intro to the game will immediately stick with you. If you’re a fan of Final Fantasy and the art style and gameplay of Octopath Traveler, you can’t miss this upcoming RPG, as Final Fantasy Resonance has the potential to be truly superb.
