The Godzilla series that keeps getting better with every installment is finally coming to an end in the winter of 2027. Its series finale promises to deliver one of the most epic kaiju battles of all time, as Godzilla faces off against one of his deadliest foes in an era-ending rematch. But while this battle will close one chapter, we already know what's next for the King of the Monsters: his most ambitious crossover yet.

If you’re a fan of all things Godzilla, then you’ve likely been following IDW Publishing’s ongoing Godzilla comic series. While the publisher has released various Godzilla one-shots, miniseries, and more over the years, this flagship series is particularly notable because it launched IDW’s latest Godzilla continuity, the Kai-Sei era, and serves as the publisher’s main ongoing series for the King of the Monsters.

With best-selling writer Tim Seeley and various a-list artists leading the charge, IDW’s Godzilla series has been well received by fans. Sites like League of Comic Geeks show that most issues released so far have earned a “very positive” 4-out-of-5-star rating from readers. However, an end is now in sight for this awesome series, with its finale set to deliver one last epic battle between Godzilla and the infamous Destoroyah.

Destoroyah is one of Godzilla’s most powerful and narratively important foes. Serving as the primary antagonist of the 1995 film Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, the movie delivered one of the most memorable Godzilla battles of all time and brought the original Heisei-era Godzilla storyline to a close. Furthermore, Destoroyah is not only one of Godzilla’s most formidable enemies, but his origin is also directly connected to the original 1954 Godzilla film. The kaiju was created by the infamous Oxygen Destroyer, the devastating weapon developed by Dr. Daisuke Serizawa to kill the original Godzilla.

Together, these facts highlight just how important Destoroyah is to Godzilla’s overall legacy. The kaiju’s impact on the franchise will expand even further in IDW’s Godzilla, as he is set to return as a primary antagonist. Now, fans will get to see the two kaiju clash once more in the series finale on February 3, 2027, with Tim Seeley and Hendry Prasetya’s Godzilla #17. This oversized final issue will span 48 pages and be available for $7.99 upon its release. A synopsis of the issue can be found below:

Energy Godzilla seems near unstoppable — the full power of Godzilla, untethered by its physical body. It’s the undisputed king of all existing kaiju... but what if someone were to create something new? What if the leading kai-sei scientist, the villainous Lament, were to gain access to the incredible resources of G-Force... and what if she used those resources to create the ultimate Godzilla killer? Destoroyah is here.

In order to defeat this new monster, Godzilla will have to achieve its most powerful form yet…

According to future solicitations, fans can expect Destoroyah to make his physical return in the December 2, 2026, release of Godzilla #15. Issue #16 will continue to explore the impact of the character’s return, with the final battle taking place in #17. So, if you're looking forward to a rematch between Godzilla and Destoroyah, some additional reading is encouraged before diving into the series finale.

While issue #17 will serve as the finale of IDW’s ongoing Godzilla series, it will also set up the King of the Monsters’ next chapter by paving the way for an epic Kai-Sei Era crossover: Godzilla Vs. Everything. This four-issue crossover event will come from writer Tim Seeley and acclaimed artist Fero Pe. No release date is confirmed, but the crossover is expected to arrive sometime in 2027, likely in late winter or early spring.

As previously mentioned, IDW Publishing has produced an impressive lineup of Godzilla titles, including Godzilla, Starship Godzilla, Deadzone, and The Horror of Godzilla. Now, fans are about to see the payoff of IDW’s connected universe as these various series come together, revealing what all these titles have been building toward since 2025.

In Godzilla Vs. Everything, fans will find a Godzilla who has reached his most powerful form yet and has his sights set on destroying the world. The crossover event will thus answer one major question: “Can the combined forces of Earth - and beyond - stop the King of the Monsters, or will Godzilla finally destroy the world?”

Godzilla Vs. Everything is looking like it might be one of IDW’s most ambitious Godzilla crossovers yet. If you plan to dive into this event, catching up on IDW’s various Godzilla series is highly recommended for the best possible reading experience when the crossover finally arrives.

Godzilla #17 from IDW Publishing will be available to read on February 3, 2027!
