KUALA TERENGGANU, Oct 19 — A 63-year-old housewife lost RM87,975.04 after being duped by an online investment scam involving a non-existent scheme.

Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the victim came across a stock investment advertisement on Facebook on October 3.

He said the woman was attracted to the scheme and contacted a male suspect via WhatsApp for more information.

“The suspect persuaded the victim to join the scheme by promising lucrative returns of RM25,000 for every RM450 invested.

“Blinded by the prospect of high returns, the victim made nine payments totalling RM87,975.04 using her savings and money obtained by pawning her jewellery between Oct 3 and 12,” he said in a statement today.

Azli said the victim suspected she had been cheated after failing to recover her initial investment or receive any profits. Her attempts to contact the suspect were also unsuccessful.

“The victim, who is from Wakaf Tembusu, Kuala Nerus, subsequently lodged a police report at 7.58 pm yesterday,” he said. — Bernama
