‘Irumbuth Thottam’ set to become first Malaysian Tamil feature released theatrically in Australia

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — Malaysian film Irumbuth Thottam, directed by Jaydev Jayakumar, is set to become the first local Tamil feature to receive a public theatrical release in Australia.

Screenings are scheduled for October 2026, with the film presented in Australia by the Melbourne Malaysian Indian Cultural Club (MMICC).

Producer Jegen John Peter confirmed to Malay Mail that the Australian release will begin in Melbourne, with cinema listings expected to be announced soon.

Produced by AVLT Production Sdn Bhd, Irumbuth Thottam explores teenage pregnancy alongside themes of family honour and social expectations.

The crime thriller centres on the murder of a teenage girl, with two investigators tasked with uncovering the truth and identifying the person responsible.

Irumbuth Thottam was released in Malaysia on August 6 and has since completed its theatrical run, grossing RM238,876.

The film was also among the few Tamil productions to be screened in Kuala Terengganu, where, according to Jegen, it drew a large crowd, with Malays making up about 80 per cent of the audience.

Jayakumar previously told Malay Mail that Irumbuth Thottam began as a family drama before developing into a crime thriller, a genre he is passionate about.

The film was also inspired by a real-life situation the director observed during his school days.

The cast includes Irfan Zaini, Logavarman Stideran, Marie Dashani Matthews, Datuk Geethanjali G, Adli Hafidz, Balan Kash, Mohana Raj, Dhurgaashini S Vijyan, Vino Shan, Vijay Naidu, V Kogila, Kalaimamani KS Maniam and Yuneswaran Ramaraj.

The Australian screenings will give Irumbuth Thottam a theatrical audience beyond Malaysia following the completion of its domestic run.
