LTFRB summons 21 bus, UV Express operators for various violations

MANILA, Philippines—The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Saturday said it has summoned 21 operators of buses and UV express units for violating the rules at the Edsa Busway as well as operating dilapidated units.

In a statement, the agency said show cause orders were issued to bus operators following the deployment of “mystery riders.”

The “mystery riders” were tasked with monitoring bus drivers who deliberately slow down their buses, with the LTFRB noting that traffic enforcers have been directed to implement a 30-second rule in bus stops.

It added that two drivers and a bus conductor were also apprehended along Edsa Busway for smoking inside the vehicle.

Show cause orders were also issued to several operators of UV Express services over their use of “dilapidated and smelly” vehicles following complaints from passengers, with the majority of the vehicles were apprehended along routes in Bulacan going to Metro Manila

The LTFRB said their violations included having a non-functioning air conditioner, faded paints, a “dilapidated” chair and an “unpleasant” smell inside the vehicle.

All the operators who received the summons were asked to explain why their franchise should not be revoked or suspended amid their violations.

Amid the issuance of show cause orders, acting LTFRB chairperson Greg Pua Jr. urged operators of public utility vehicles (PUVs) to follow the rules and regulations that were established to ensure a safe and comfortable transportation.

“There are conditions that PUV operators are mandated to comply with—all of them are anchored on road safety and professionalism of the country’s public land transportation system,” he said.

“Accountability comes for those who chose to defy or ignore these conditions, and this is what the LTFRB did in the case of these 21 bus and UV Express operators,” added Pua. /gsg
