Liverpool appoints Julian Ward as sporting director for second spell

Liverpool confirmed the return of Julian Ward as sporting director on Saturday, stepping in after Richard Hughes departed to take up a role with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
Ward previously held the same position at the Merseyside club during the 2022–23 campaign and most recently worked as technical director for Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s ownership group.

FSG president Mike Gordon highlighted Ward’s track record in the official statement: “The knowledge and expertise he brings will only enhance our football operations, while also ensuring Andoni (Iraola) is provided with the support he requires as he continues to make such a positive impression as head coach.”

Ward, who first joined Liverpool in 2012 and built his reputation across scouting, recruitment and player-development strategy, described the moment as a pivotal one for the club: “This is an exciting period for Liverpool, on and off the pitch, in which change and opportunity go hand in hand, but at the same time the culture, values and principles that have underpinned the club for so long remain as strong as ever.”
Hughes’ exit from marks the latest in a series of senior departures from Liverpool’s football operation in recent months, following Michael Edwards’ earlier decision to step down as CEO of football for FSG.
